We recently completed an open plan loft conversion for a property in West Bridgford, transforming an unused attic into a bright and practical living space. The client wanted a seamless open plan layout that would keep the loft feeling spacious and connected, so we designed the conversion without a separate bedroom door. Instead, we created a natural flow between the sleeping area and the rest of the space.
The conversion was built entirely within the existing roof structure, which required careful planning to make the most of the available head height and floor area. One of the key features of the layout was the ensuite bathroom, which we tucked neatly into the pitched section of the roof. Rather than closing it off entirely, we installed a privacy wall, giving the bathroom some separation while keeping it visible from the bedroom. This helped preserve the open plan feel the client was looking for.
With every loft conversion, making smart use of space is essential - especially in areas with sloping ceilings and awkward angles. In this project, we created built-in wardrobes along the straight walls to maximise floor space and avoid the need for bulky freestanding furniture.
We also made clever use of the alcoves within the roof structure to provide extra storage solutions. These often-overlooked areas were turned into usable sections for shelving, cupboards and drawers, making sure no space was wasted. The result was a clean and clutter-free layout that still offered plenty of storage.
To tie the new loft in with the rest of the home, we paid close attention to the details. The new stair balustrade leading up into the loft was designed and finished to match the existing one, helping the conversion feel like a natural extension rather than a bolt-on addition. This type of continuity is important in loft conversions, especially when the new space will be used regularly.
We also matched paint colours, finishes and fixtures throughout the conversion to keep everything cohesive. The end result was a bright, open and contemporary loft space with all the practical touches needed for everyday living.
This open plan loft conversion in West Bridgford is a great example of how considered design and efficient use of space can transform a roof space into a usable and stylish part of the home. With a combination of smart storage, contemporary finishes and an ensuite that blends seamlessly into the layout, the loft now offers comfort and flexibility without feeling boxed in.
